Background information on LEDs and their impact on LED Lighting

The first practical LED (Light Emitting Diode) was invented in 1962 by Nick Holonyak, and Edith Flanigen. Until the 90's LEDs were fairly low power in terms of light output and were only used primarily as status indicators in hifi, tv's, and other electrical goods. Then around 1993 the World's first blue LED was commercially developed by Professor Shuji Nakamura. Since that breakthrough LED Technology has developed at a staggering pace, matching or even rivalling that of the advance in computer technology.

By the turn of 1999 all kinds of LED Lighting products were making use of the new found applications for LEDs. Some of those products are many that we sell on our website such as Flush Mount LEDs used in Deck and Step Lighting, LED Screw Lights, LED Tubes and Bars, Marker Lights for Trucks and Trailers, scanning lights, Grill lights, Tyre Lights, Ground Lighting, and Suspension Lighting.

The first wave of LEDs were super bright and ultra bright LEDs, then Lumileds released their Luxeon range from 2001 onwards. This next generation of LEDs were now being measured in 1 watt, 3 watt, and 5 watt upwards. There are other LED technologies emerging on the market which far surpass general Halogens and Incandescent Bulbs in terms of light output. The Litewave Company in many aspects is on the frontline of the rapidly moving lighting market. We have developed several product using very powerful LED Light sources, one of which is the CoolFusion jointly developed by Litewave and ICELED.

We have many and varied LED products suitable for; model lighting, limo and limousine lighting, motorbike lighting, backlighting, sign illumination, cabinet and cupboard lighting, mood lighting, ambient lighting.

Many of the LED products have found uses by PC Modders for illumination of their PCs, vehicle owners lighting their cars, bikes, and even trucks with LEDs. Not to be left behind home owners are now building LED Lighting systems into their kitchens, lounges, bathrooms and bedrooms, and outdoors in the garden. Many of our products are perfect for lighting such places.

The trend now is for that spare room, basement or attic to be converted into a room of relaxation, namely a home cinema or entertainments room. Our Glow Wire, Superflux LED Modules, LED Bars, and Digital Lighting systems are ideally suited in such situations giving the room the desired mood. We can assist you, your electrician or project manager to provide the solutions to your requirements.

LED Lighting offers one massive advantage over traditional lighting - running costs. LEDs use very little power and depending on whether they are powered through in-line resistors or are properly current regulated can last between 10,000 and 100,000 hours respectively.
